Light (Al-Noor)
64 verses, revealed in Medina after Exodus (Al-Hashr) before Pilgrimage (Al-Hajj)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ This is a chapter which We have revealed to you and made obligatory for you to follow its guidance. We have revealed clear verses in it so that perhaps you may take heed. (1) AS FOR the adulteress and the adulterer flog each of them with a hundred stripes, and let not compassion with them keep you from [carrying out] this law of God, if you [truly] believe in God and the Last Day; and let a group of the believers witness their chastisement. (2) A man guilty of adultery (or fornication) shall not marry any but the woman guilty of the same or a mushrik woman, and none shall marry a woman guilty of adultery (or fornication) but the man guilty of the same or a mushrik man: such marriages are forbidden to true believers. (3) And those who accuse honourable women but bring not four witnesses, scourge them (with) eighty stripes and never (afterward) accept their testimony - They indeed are evil-doers - (4) Except those who repent after this and act aright, for surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (5) And as for those who accuse their own wives [of adultery,] but have no witnesses except themselves, let each of these [accusers] call God four times to witness that he is indeed telling the truth, (6) And yet a fifth, invoking the curse of Allah on him if he is of those who lie. (7) The wife shall receive no punishment, if she bears witness four times in the name of God that her husband has lied (8) and the fifth time she invokes Allah's wrath upon herself, if he be true (in his charge). (9) AND WERE it not for God's favour upon you, [O man,] and His grace, and that God is a wise acceptor of repentance...! (10)
