Light (Al-Noor)
64 verses, revealed in Medina after Exodus (Al-Hashr) before Pilgrimage (Al-Hajj)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ This is a chapter which We have sent down and appointed; and in it We have sent down clear verses in order that you will remember. (1) The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment. (2) The fornicator does not marry except a [female] fornicator or polytheist, and none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist, and that has been made unlawful to the believers. (3) As for those persons who charge chaste women with false accusations but do not produce four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes and never accept their evidence afterwards, for they themselves are transgressors, (4) Except those who repent after this and reform themselves; so indeed Allah is Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful. (5) One who accuses his wife and has no witnesses except himself shall swear four times by God that his charge is true, (6) And (swear) a fifth time that if he tell a lie the curse of God be on him. (7) And it shall avert the chastisement from her if she testify four times, bearing Allah to witness that he is most surely one of the liars; (8) On the fifth time she should say, "Let the curse of God be upon me if what he says is true." (9) And were it not for Allah's grace upon you and His mercy-- and that Allah is Oft-returning (to mercy), Wise! (10)
