The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Mim. (1) The Romans have been conquered (2) in a land close by. But, in a few years after their defeat they shall become the victors. (3) All matters of the past and future are in the hands of God. The believers will enjoy the help of God on that Day. (4) In Allah succour. He succoureth whomsoever He will, and He is the Mighty, the Merciful. (5) (This is) Allah's promise! Allah will not fail His promise, but most people do not know. (6) They only know the palpable life of this world, and are oblivious of the Hereafter. (7) Do they not contemplate within themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers. (8) Have they not travelled through the land and seen what end their predecessors met? They were mightier than them: they cultivated the earth more and built more upon it than these have ever built. Their own messengers also came to them with clear signs: God did not wrong them; they wronged themselves. (9) Therefore evil was the end of those who did evil, for they denied the signs of God and made fun of them. (10)
