Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha, Meem. (1) By the Clear Book. (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) In it every wise matter is determined (4) determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) (5) as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) Covering the people, this is a painful torment. (11) (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12) How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, (13) And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? (14) We now remove the punishment for some days so you will again commit the same. (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. (20) But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." (21) Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." (24) How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. (25) And corn-fields and noble buildings, (26) and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! (27) Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. (28) The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. (29)
