Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Clear Book (2) We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan,, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. (3) In it every wise matter is determined (4) As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - (5) as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. (11) [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16) ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) Do not consider yourselves above God? I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). (19) “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” (20) “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” (21) And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. (22) [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. (23) And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. (24) How many were the gardens, springs, (25) and cornfields and splendid buildings, (26) And comfort wherein they were amused. (27) Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. (28) and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. (29)
