Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the Clear Book (2) We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), (5) A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. (7) There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) Yet they are lost in doubt and play. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) Covering the people; this is a painful torment. (11) (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12) How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? (13) Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. (14) Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. (19) I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. (20) 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' (21) He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” (22) So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. (23) and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" (24) How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! (27) Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! (28) So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. (29)
