Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
HA MIM. (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. (3) Therein every wise affair is made distinct, (4) an order from Us. We are ever sending. (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, (6) Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. (9) Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, (10) Covering the people; this is a painful torment. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. (12) How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. (13) And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? (14) We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], (17) Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. (20) “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” (21) Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! (28) So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. (29)
