Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha'. Mim. (1) I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) Whereon every wise command is made clear (4) As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - (5) A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. (6) Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. (7) There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) Nay, but they play in doubt. (9) Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. (12) How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? (13) yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). (19) “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” (20) And if you do not believe me, then leave me' (21) And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. (22) (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. (23) and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) sown fields, and how noble a station, (26) And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; (27) Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; (29)
