Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) By the Scripture that maketh plain (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom (4) A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), (5) as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. (7) There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, (13) But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." (14) [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] (17) "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! (18) "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. (23) "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) and sown fields and splendid mansions, (26) And the delights which they had been enjoying! (27) Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
