Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Clear Book. (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4) an order from Us. We are ever sending. (5) A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. (7) There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay! They play in doubt. (9) Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke (10) enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, (13) then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. (16) ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. (19) I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. (20) And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. (21) Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) and cornfields and splendid buildings, (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
