Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha, Meem. (1) I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) an order from Us. We are ever sending. (5) A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) Nay, but they play in doubt. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. (12) How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" (14) If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them (17) [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. (20) And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. (21) Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) They left - how many! of gardens and springs. (25) corn-fields, gracious mansions, (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. (28) The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. (29)
