Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4) As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), (5) (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) Aye! they're in doubt sporting. (9) Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. (10) Covering the people; this is a painful torment. (11) 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" (14) We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. (15) One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16) ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) Do not consider yourselves above God? I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). (19) I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. (20) And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" (21) But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" (22) We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” (23) "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." (24) How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains (25) and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
