Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim. (1) By the Clear Book (2) Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - (3) On which all affairs are sorted out and decided (4) by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger (5) as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. (6) He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. (7) There is no worship except for Him He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. (9) Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. (16) ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; (19) and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. (20) And if you do not believe me, then leave me' (21) And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. (22) We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. (23) “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” (24) [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, (25) corn-fields, gracious mansions, (26) and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
