Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the luminious Book. (2) We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; (3) In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4) at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] (5) as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, (6) He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. (7) There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke (10) enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. (11) (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. (15) On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. (16) ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): (17) Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” (18) "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. (19) I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! (27) Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. (28) And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). (29)
