Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha, Meem. (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) In it every wise matter is determined (4) As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: (5) A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. (7) There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, but they play in doubt. (9) So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." (14) Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. (15) One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16) ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: (23) "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, (25) and sown fields and splendid mansions, (26) And comfort wherein they were amused. (27) Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. (29)
