Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the Clear Book. (2) surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) (5) (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) Yet they play about in doubt. (9) Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. (11) (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. (12) How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- (13) Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. (16) ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” (21) Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. (24) [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, (25) and cornfields and splendid buildings, (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
