Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom (4) As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - (5) A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. (9) So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: (10) Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. (11) Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' (14) Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). (15) On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. (16) ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, (17) "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. (18) Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. (19) "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). (20) And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. (21) And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. (22) 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. (23) and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" (24) They left how many gardens and fountains, (25) And the cornlands and the goodly sites (26) And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! (27) We gave these as an inheritance to other people. (28) And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
