Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha Mim (1) By the Book that makes things clear, (2) Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. (3) on that night every wise decree is specified (4) A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), (5) as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) Rather they are in doubt, playing. (9) But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke (10) Covering the people; this is a painful torment. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". (14) Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, (17) saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, (18) "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." (21) Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. (22) (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. (23) And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” (24) How many were the gardens, springs, (25) and cornfields and splendid buildings, (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. (29)
