Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. (7) There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Aye! they're in doubt sporting. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" (14) 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' (15) The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. (16) ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. (19) I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. (20) And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. (21) But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' (24) They left - how many! of gardens and springs. (25) corn-fields, gracious mansions, (26) And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
