The Mountain (Al-Toor)
49 verses, revealed in Mecca after Prostration (Al-Sajdah) before Kingship (Al-Mulk)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the Mount Sinai, (1) And the Book written (2) in a parchment unrolled, (3) By the much-frequented Fane; (4) and by the lofty vault of the sky, (5) And [by] the sea filled [with fire], (6) The punishment of your Lord is certain to come. (7) There is none that can ward it off. (8) On the Day when the heaven will shake with a dreadful shaking, (9) and the mountains move, moving. (10) Woe, then, on that Day to all who give the lie to the truth (11) Who, ignoring the Reality, engage in pleasantries. (12) On that day they will be violently pushed into the fire (13) (And it is said unto them): This is the Fire which ye were wont to deny. (14) Is this magic or do you not see? (15) Endure the heat thereof, and whether ye are patient of it or impatient of it is all one for you. Ye are only being paid for what ye used to do. (16) But in the Gardens the righteous shall live in bliss, (17) rejoicing in all their Lord has given them, and their Lord will guard them against the punishment of Hell. (18) (They will be told): “Eat and drink to your hearts' content as a reward for your deeds.” (19) They will recline (with ease) on thrones arranged in ranks. And We shall marry them to Houris (female, fair ones) with wide lovely eyes. (20) And those who accepted faith, and whose descendants followed them with faith We have joined their descendants with them, and have not reduced anything for them from their deeds; every soul is trapped in its own deeds. (21) And We shall provide them with fruit and meat, such as they desire. (22) while they pass therein a cup one to another wherein is no idle talk, no cause of sin, (23) ۞ Youths as fair as hidden pearls will be set apart to wait upon them; they will be running to and fro to serve them. (24) And some of them draw near unto others, questioning, (25) They say, 'We were before among our people, ever going in fear, (26) and so God has graced us with His favour, and has warded off from us all suffering through the scorching winds [of frustration]. (27) “Indeed we used to worship Him in our previous life; indeed He only is the Benign, the Most Merciful.” (28)
