The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped (1) Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. (2) Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. (3) It is a revelations which has been revealed to him (4) He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. (5) Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael - Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabari]. (6) appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, (7) and then drew near, and came close, (8) Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, (9) And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. (10) His heart added no untruth to what he saw. (11) Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? (12) And he certainly saw him in another descent (13) by the lote tree beyond which none may pass (14) Near it is the Garden of Abode. (15) When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. (16) [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: (17) and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. (18) Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, (19) And subsequently the third, the Manat? (20) "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" (21) That, then, is an unjust division. (22) These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. (23) Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? (24) But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. (25)
