Prohibition (Al-Tahreem)
12 verses, revealed in Medina after The Wall (Al-Hujuraat) before Mutual Blaming (Al-Taghaabun)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ O Prophet, why do you forbid what Allah has made lawful for you? Is it to please your wives? Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Compassionate. (1) God has shown you how to absolve yourselves of your oaths. He is your Guardian and is All-knowing and All-wise. (2) And lo! [It so happened that] the Prophet told something in confidence to one of his wives; and when she thereupon divulged it, and God made this known to him, he acquainted [others] with some of it and passed over some of it. And as soon as he let her know it, she asked, "Who has told thee this?" - [to which] he replied, "The All-Knowing, the All-Aware has told me." (3) If ye two turn in repentance to Him, your hearts are indeed so inclined; But if ye back up each other against him, truly Allah is his Protector, and Gabriel, and (every) righteous one among those who believe,- and furthermore, the angels - will back (him) up. (4) It may be if he divorced you (all) that his Lord will give him instead of you, wives better than you, Muslims (who submit to Allah), believers, obedient to Allah, turning to Allah in repentance, worshipping Allah sincerely, fasting or emigrants (for Allah's sake), previously married and virgins. (5) Believers, safeguard yourselves and your families from a Fire fuelled by people and stones, and watched over by angels, stern and strong: angels who never disobey God's commands to them, but promptly do as they are commanded. (6) (It will then be said): “Unbelievers, make no excuses today. You are being recompensed for nothing else but your deeds.” (7)
