The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) By the grace of your Lord you are not mad. (2) And verily thine shall be a hire unending. (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) So thou shalt see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is the demented. (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) So do not comply with those who deny: (8) Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise. (9) And do not yield to any contemptible swearer, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, sinful, (12) the crude of low character (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) that, whenever Our messages are conveyed to him, such a one says, "Fables of ancient times"? (15) We shall brand him on the muzzle. (16) Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. (17) But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). (18) So an envoy from your Lord completed his round upon the garden, whilst they were sleeping. (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) And they called one another at morning, (21) [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit." (22) So they went, while they consulted together secretly, (23) “No destitute person shall enter it today.” (24) and early they went, strongly bent upon their purpose. (25) When they saw the garden, they said, "Surely we have lost our way. (26) Nay, but we are desolate! (27) The more upright of the two said, "Did I not bid you to glorify God?" (28) They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) They said: woe unto us! verily we! we have been arrogant. (31) “Hopefully, our Lord will give us a better replacement than this we now incline towards our Lord.” (32) SUCH is the suffering [with which We try some people in this world]; but greater by far will be the suffering [which sinners shall have to bear] in the life to come - if they but knew it! (33)
