The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nun. By the Pen, and what they inscribe, (1) you are not, because of the favor of your Lord, mad. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) and you are certainly on the most exalted standard of moral excellence. (4) So thou shalt see, and they will see, (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Verily, thy Sustainer alone is fully aware as to who has strayed from His path, Just as He alone is fully aware of those who have found the right way. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) They wish that you should be pliant so they (too) would be pliant. (9) Neither obey thou each feeble oath-monger, (10) the backbiter who goes about slandering, (11) the hinderer of good, the transgressor, the sinful; (12) Gross, and therewithal ignoble. (13) Because he is a possessor of wealth and children, (14) When Our revelations are rehearsed unto him, he saith: fables of the ancients. (15) Anon We shall brand him on snout. (16) We have tried you as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed to gather the fruits in the morning (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) (Then) in the morning they called out to one another, saying: (21) 'Come forth betimes upon your tillage, if you would pluck!' (22) So they went off, whispering to one another, (23) "Be sure to stop any poor person from entering the orchard today." (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Most surely we have gone astray (26) nay, rather we have been robbed!' (27) Said the most moderate of them, 'Did I not say to you, "Why do you not give glory?"' (28) They said, “Purity is to our Lord we have indeed been unjust.” (29) Then they began to reproach one another. (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) Maybe, our Lord will give us instead one better than it; surely to our Lord do we make our humble petition. (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
