The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what the scribes write. (1) thou art not, by the blessing of thy Lord, a man possessed. (2) And most surely you shall have a reward never to be cut off. (3) And indeed you possess an exemplary character. (4) So very soon, you will see and they too will realise (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily thy Lord! He is the best Knower of him who strayeth from His path, and He is the best Knower of the guided one. (7) So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). (8) They wish that thou shouldst compromise, then they would compromise. (9) Do not yield to any contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) obstructing virtues, a sinful transgressor, (12) Violent (and cruel),- with all that, base-born,- (13) Because he is a possessor of wealth and children, (14) That, when Our revelations are recited unto him, he saith: Mere fables of the men of old. (15) Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout! (16) We have tested them in the same way as we tested the dwellers of the garden (in Yemen) when they swore to pluck all the fruits of the garden in the morning, (17) without adding to their swearing, (Allah willing, InshaAllah). (18) Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. (19) So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered). (20) They then called out to each other at daybreak. (21) [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit." (22) So off they went, whispering to one another: (23) "Let no needy person come to you within it today." (24) and early they went, strongly bent upon their purpose. (25) Then when they saw it, they said, “We have indeed strayed.” (26) (Then they said): "Nay! Indeed we are deprived of (the fruits)!" (27) The more upright of the two said, "Did I not bid you to glorify God?" (28) 'Exaltations to Allah, our Lord' they said, 'We were truly harmdoers' (29) Then they started blaming one another, (30) Said they: O woe to us! surely we were inordinate: (31) "It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!" (32) Such was the punishment. And verily the punishment of the Hereafter is greater if they did but know. (33)
