The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and that which they write (therewith), (1) You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman. (2) and surely yours shall be a never-ending reward, (3) Surely, you (Prophet Muhammad) are of a great morality. (4) So you will soon see, and they too will see, (5) which of you was bereft of reason. (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) Do not, then, yield to those who reject the Truth, decrying it as false; (8) they would like thee to be soft [with them,] so that they might be soft [with thee]. (9) And obey not thou any swearer ignominous. (10) Defamer, going about with slander (11) hinderer of good, guilty aggressor, coarse-grained, (12) Crude, and above all, mean and infamous, (13) Because he is a possessor of wealth and children, (14) When Our communications are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore. (15) We shall brand him over the nose! (16) Now We have tried them, even as We tried the owners of the garden when they swore they would pluck in the morning (17) And they did not say, “If Allah wills”. (18) Then there passed by on the (garden) something (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. (19) And by morning it lay as if it had already been harvested, a barren land. (20) Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke, (21) 'Come out to your tillage if you want to reap' (22) So they departed, whispering together, (23) “Make sure that no needy person enters your garden this day.” (24) And in the morning they went, having the power to prevent. (25) When they saw the garden, they said, "Surely we have lost our way. (26) Nay, but we are desolate! (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) 'Exaltations to Allah, our Lord' they said, 'We were truly harmdoers' (29) And they came blaming one another. (30) They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed! (31) We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord (wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the Hereafter)." (32) Such was their punishment, [in this life]. But the punishment of the life to come is much more severe, if only they knew it! (33)
