The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by that which they inscribe. (1) You are not demented by the grace of your Lord. (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) For you are verily born of sublime nature. (4) So thou shalt see, and they will see, (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) Therefore do not listen to the deniers. (8) Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise. (9) Neither obey thou each feeble oath-monger, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) obstructing virtues, a sinful transgressor, (12) Gross, and therewithal ignoble. (13) just because he has wealth and sons, (14) when Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are just ancient fables." (15) We shall mark him upon his nose! (16) Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning, (17) And they did not say, “If Allah wills”. (18) Then there encompassed it a visitation from your Lord while they were sleeping. (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) Then they cried out unto each other in the morning. (21) 'Come out to your tillage if you want to reap' (22) They all left, whispering to one another, (23) 'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.' (24) They went betimes, strong in (this) purpose. (25) Then when they beheld it, they said: verily we have strayed. (26) Indeed, we are utterly ruined!" (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) 'Exaltations to Allah, our Lord' they said, 'We were truly harmdoers' (29) Then they approached one another, blaming each other. (30) [In the end] they said: "Oh, woe unto us! Verily, we did behave outrageously! (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! (33)
