The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Noon. I swear by the pen and what the angels write, (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) And verily, for you (O Muhammad SAW) will be an endless reward. (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) So you will see and they will see (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) Fain would they that thou shouldst be pliant, so that they will be pliant. (9) And obey thou not every mean swearer, (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) Forbidder of good, outstepping the limits, sinful, (12) who is ignoble and besides all that, base-born; (13) (He was so) because he had wealth and children. (14) When you recite Our revelations to him, he says: "These are fables of long ago." (15) [For this] We shall brand him with indelible disgrace! (16) Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning, (17) But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). (18) Then there passed by on the (garden) something (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) And they called one another at morning, (21) [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit." (22) So they departed, talking in low voices: (23) "Let no beggar come to the garden". (24) And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom). (25) Then when they saw it, they said, “We have indeed strayed.” (26) Nay! we are made to suffer privation. (27) The best among them said: "Did I not tell you: why do you not say: Insha' Allah (If Allah will)." (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then they started blaming one another, (30) They said, "Woe to us. We have been arrogant. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better than it; to our Lord we humbly turn.' (32) SUCH is the suffering [with which We try some people in this world]; but greater by far will be the suffering [which sinners shall have to bear] in the life to come - if they but knew it! (33)
