The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Nun. CONSIDER the pen, and all that they write [therewith]! (1) By your Lord's Grace, you are not afflicted with madness, (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) And most surely you conform (yourself) to sublime morality. (4) So you will soon see, and they too will see, (5) Who is distracted. (6) Verily, your Lord knows better, who (among men) has gone astray from His Path, and He knows better those who are guided. (7) Then do not obey the deniers. (8) They wish that in some way you may yield, so they too might soften their stand. (9) And do not obey every mean swearer, (10) back-biting, gossiping, (11) (Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond bounds, deep in sin, (12) [or] one who is cruel, by greed possessed, and in addition to all this, utterly useless [to his fellow-men]. (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) Now We have tried them, even as We tried the owners of the garden when they swore they would pluck in the morning (17) Without making exception. (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) and so by morning the orchard lay as though it had been fully harvested. (20) (Then) in the morning they called out to one another, saying: (21) Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits." (22) So they departed, talking in low voices: (23) 'No needy person shall set foot in it today' (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) (No, we are not lost.) In fact, we have been deprived of everything". (27) (Whereupon) the best among them said: 'Did I not say to you to exalt (Allah)' (28) They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers." (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord. (32) SUCH is the suffering [with which We try some people in this world]; but greater by far will be the suffering [which sinners shall have to bear] in the life to come - if they but knew it! (33)
