The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by what you write, (1) Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. (2) Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: (3) For you are truly of a sublime character. (4) So you shall see, and they (too) shall see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) So (O Muhammad SAW) obey not the deniers [(of Islamic Monotheism those who belie the Verses of Allah), the Oneness of Allah, and the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad SAW), etc.] (8) They only want that you should relent, so that they may come to terms. (9) And obey thou not every mean swearer, (10) Detracter, spreader abroad of slanders, (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, sinful, (12) Foul mouthed, and in addition to all this, of improper lineage. (13) just because he has wealth and sons, (14) When Our communications are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore. (15) Anon We shall brand him on snout. (16) We have tried you as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed to gather the fruits in the morning (17) But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). (18) Then a calamity from your Lord fell upon it, but they remained fast asleep. (19) Then in the morning it became as though it had been reaped. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) 'Come out to your tillage if you want to reap' (22) So they went off, whispering to one another, (23) No needy man shall enter it to-day against you. (24) And they went out early, determined in their resolve. (25) But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way; (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) (Whereupon) the best among them said: 'Did I not say to you to exalt (Allah)' (28) They said, "All glory belongs to God. We have certainly been unjust". (29) Then they turned to each other reproaching. (30) They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed! (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than it in exchange. To our Lord we humbly turn' (32) Such was their punishment, [in this life]. But the punishment of the life to come is much more severe, if only they knew it! (33)
