The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by that which they inscribe. (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. (4) And thou wilt see and they will see (5) Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil]. (6) Verily thy Lord! He is the best Knower of him who strayeth from His path, and He is the best Knower of the guided one. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) They want you to make concessions to them and then they will reciprocate. (9) Furthermore, defer not to the contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) hinderer of good, guilty aggressor, coarse-grained, (12) the coarse-grained, and above all mean and ignoble; (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) When Our communications are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore. (15) We shall brand him upon the muzzle! (16) Now We have tried them, even as We tried the owners of the garden when they swore they would pluck in the morning (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) Then there encompassed it a visitation from your Lord while they were sleeping. (19) So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered). (20) Then they cried out unto each other in the morning. (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) So they went off, while whispering to one another. (23) 'No needy person shall set foot in it today' (24) And they went out betimes determined in purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Lo! we are in error! (26) Nay! we are made to suffer privation. (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) "Glory to our Lord," they said; we were really in the wrong." (29) Then they began to heap reproaches on each other. (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord (wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the Hereafter)." (32) Such is Our chastisement; and the punishment of the Hereafter will be greater, if only they knew! (33)
