The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Noon. I swear by the pen and what the angels write, (1) You are not demented by the grace of your Lord. (2) And verily thine shall be a hire unending. (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) So thou shalt see, and they will see, (5) which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way. (7) Therefore, do not obey those who belie, (8) They only want that you should relent, so that they may come to terms. (9) And obey thou not every mean swearer, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) One who excessively forbids the good, transgressor, sinner. (12) Violent (and cruel),- with all that, base-born,- (13) Because he is owner of riches and children. (14) that, whenever Our messages are conveyed to him, such a one says, "Fables of ancient times"? (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) We have tried them as we tried the owners of a certain orchard, who vowed to harvest all its fruits the next morning, (17) Without making exception. (18) whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep, (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) As the morning broke, they called out, one to another,- (21) “Hurry to your orchard if you would gather its fruit.” (22) They all left, whispering to one another, (23) “Make sure that no needy person enters your garden this day.” (24) They were resolved to repel the beggars. (25) But when they saw it, they said, 'Surely we are gone astray; (26) Aye! it is we who are deprived! (27) The more upright of the two said, "Did I not bid you to glorify God?" (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) Then they turned, one against another, in blaming. (30) They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord. (32) SUCH is the suffering [with which We try some people in this world]; but greater by far will be the suffering [which sinners shall have to bear] in the life to come - if they but knew it! (33)
