The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what the scribes write. (1) You are not demented by the grace of your Lord. (2) And verily, thine shall be a reward neverending (3) surely thou art upon a mighty morality. (4) And thou wilt see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path and who is rightly guided. (7) Wherefore obey not thou the beliers. (8) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9) Do not heed a contemptible swearer, (10) [or to] the slanderer that goes about with defaming tales, (11) [or] the withholder of good, [or] the sinful aggressor, (12) Crude, and above all, mean and infamous, (13) Because he is a possessor of wealth and children, (14) When Our revelations are rehearsed unto him, he saith: fables of the ancients. (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) Verily We! We have proved them even as We proved the fellows of a garden when they sware that they would surely reap it in the morning. (17) without saying, "If it be God's will." (18) whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep, (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke, (21) Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit). (22) So they went off, while whispering to one another. (23) “No destitute person shall enter it today.” (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) But as soon as they beheld [the garden and could not recognize] it, they exclaimed, "Surely we have lost our way!" (26) nay, rather we have been robbed!' (27) The most moderate of them said: said I not unto you, wherefore hallow him ye not! (28) They said: Glorified be our Lord! Lo! we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then they turned, one against another, in reproach. (30) Said they: O woe to us! surely we were inordinate: (31) We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord (wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the Hereafter)." (32) Such is the torment. And the torment of the Hereafter is far greater; if they but knew. (33)
