The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Noon. By the Pen and that (the angels) write, (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) And verily, for you (O Muhammad SAW) will be an endless reward. (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) And thou wilt see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) So do not comply with those who deny: (8) Fain would they that thou shouldst be pliant, so that they will be pliant. (9) And do not obey every mean swearer, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) or to one who places obstacles in the way of good being done or to the wicked transgressor, (12) Ignoble, besides all that, base-born; (13) (who so acts) simply because he has wealth and sons, (14) and whenever Our verses are rehearsed to him, he says: “These are fairy- tales of times gone by.” (15) We shall brand him on the muzzle. (16) Surely We will try them as We tried the owners of the garden, when they swore that they would certainly cut off the produce in the morning, (17) But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). (18) So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep. (19) So it became as black, barren land. (20) They then called out to each other at daybreak. (21) Saying: go out betimes to your tilth if ye would reap. (22) And so they departed, whispering to one another: (23) [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person." (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) Indeed, we are utterly ruined!" (27) The best among them said: "Did I not tell you: why do you not say: Insha' Allah (If Allah will)." (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) and then they turned upon one another with mutual reproaches. (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) “Hopefully, our Lord will give us a better replacement than this we now incline towards our Lord.” (32) Such was their punishment. But the punishment of the Everlasting Life is much greater, if they but knew. (33)
