The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place (1) to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God (2) From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. (3) all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… (4) Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). (5) behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away (6) But We see it [as] near. (7) On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper (8) And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. (9) No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend (10) Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, (11) and his spouse and his brother, (12) And his kindred who sheltered him, (13) And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! (14) By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- (15) Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- (16) Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289] (17) And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). (18) ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- (19) When they are afflicted, they complain, (20) And refraining, when good reaches him. (21) Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) (22) Who are at their prayer constant. (23) who, from their wealth is a known right (24) For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- (27) Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. (28) and guard their private parts (29) Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, (30) But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - (31) And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, (32) and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; (33) And those who protect their prayers. (34) Those shall be in gardens, honored. (35)
