The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), (1) To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. (2) from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. (5) They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. (6) Whereas We see it impending. (7) The day the sky becomes like molten brass, (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, (10) though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, (11) And his wife and his brother (12) And his kin that harboured him (13) and all those on earth. (14) But no! There is a raging blaze (15) snatching away the scalp, (16) Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). (17) And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. (18) ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. (19) [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; (20) And niggardly when good touches him; (21) But not so the worshippers (22) who are constant in prayer; (23) And those in whose wealth there is a known right, (24) to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- (27) Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, (28) who guard their carnal desires (29) Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy (30) And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) And those who are in their testimonies upright (33) And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. (34) Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. (35)
