The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall (1) The infidels, of which there is no averter. (2) From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways (3) by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: (5) They surely take it to be far away, (6) but We see it to be very near. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, (8) And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, (9) And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend (10) They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. (11) And his wife and his brother (12) and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, (13) and all those on earth. (14) Nay, verily it is a furnace (15) Eager to roast; (16) It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, (17) And masseth and then hoardeth. (18) ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: (19) Fretful when evil touches him; (20) And niggardly when good reaches him;- (21) Except the observers of prayer - (22) Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); (23) who, from their wealth is a known right (24) For the needy and those dispossessed, (25) And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; (26) And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) and those who guard their private parts, (29) except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, (30) But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - (31) and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies. (33) And those who of their prayer are observant. (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
