The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall (1) Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, (2) From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. (3) Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. (4) Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. (5) behold, they see it as if far off; (6) But We see it (quite) near. (7) On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper (8) And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, (9) And no friend inquires after friend (10) Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. (11) And his wife and his brother (12) And his kindred who sheltered him, (13) And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. (14) But never. It is pure white flame (15) That would skin the scalp. (16) It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, (17) and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. (18) ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. (19) Fretful when evil befalleth him (20) and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, (21) Not so are the prayerful. (22) Those who are regular in their prayers. (23) And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, (24) For the petitioner and the deprived - (25) And those who accept the truth of the judgment day (26) And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- (27) Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. (28) And those who guard their private parts, (29) Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) and standby their witnessing, (33) And those who of their prayer are observant. (34) These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. (35)
