The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, (1) the unbelievers which none can prevent. (2) From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. (5) Lo! they behold it afar off (6) Whereas We see it impending. (7) The day when the sky will become as molten copper, (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) And not a friend shall ask a friend, (10) Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, (11) his wife, his brother, (12) And his kin that harboured him (13) and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. (14) By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! (15) tearing away his skin! (16) It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. (17) And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! (18) ۞ Human beings are created greedy. (19) [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; (20) and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. (21) Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), (22) Those who are constant at their prayer (23) And those in whose wealth there is a known right, (24) for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, (26) and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement (27) Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - (28) And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). (29) Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy (30) but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; (31) (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who are attentive at their worship. (34) These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. (35)
