The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, (1) which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. (2) from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, (3) The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, (4) (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. (5) Verily they behold it afar off. (6) while We think that it is near at hand. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, (8) And the hills become as flakes of wool, (9) And not a friend shall ask a friend, (10) though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, (11) And his wife and his brother (12) His kindred who sheltered him, (13) And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: (14) Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. (15) That would skin the scalp. (16) It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) but when good comes upon him, he is grudging (21) Not so those devoted to Prayer;- (22) who are constant in prayer; (23) those in whose wealth is a right known (24) for the beggar and the outcast, (25) and those who believe in the Day of Judgement (26) and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement (27) For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- (28) And those who of their private parts are guards. (29) Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; (30) But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; (31) and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; (32) who testify to what they have witnessed, (33) And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. (34) It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. (35)
