The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, (1) Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, (2) From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), (3) To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. (5) Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, (6) But We see it (quite) near. (7) The day when the sky will become as molten copper, (8) and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, (9) And no friend will ask after a friend, (10) though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, (11) his companion (wife), his brother, (12) the kinsmen who gave him shelter, (13) and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. (14) No, in truth, it is a Furnace! (15) A remover of exteriors. (16) It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. (17) and amassed (riches) and hoarded. (18) ۞ Surely man was created fretful, (19) bewailing when evil befalls him, (20) And niggardly when good touches him; (21) except those that pray, (22) Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); (23) And those within whose wealth is a known right (24) for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; (25) and those who believe in the Day of Judgement (26) And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) And those who guard their private parts, (29) Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. (30) (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), (31) And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, (32) And those who are in their testimonies upright (33) and are steadfast in their prayers. (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
