The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall (1) The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- (2) From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), (3) The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, (4) So be patient with gracious patience. (5) Lo! they behold it afar off (6) but We see it is nigh. (7) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, (10) although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, (11) and of his spouse, and of his brother, (12) And his kin that sheltered him. (13) And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. (14) But never. It is pure white flame (15) Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- (16) and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back (17) And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. (18) ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. (19) Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him (20) And, when good befalleth him, grudging; (21) Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. (22) Who are constant at their worship (23) In whose wealth a due share is included (24) For the beggar and the destitute. (25) and those who believe in the Day of Judgement (26) and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; (27) For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- (28) And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). (29) Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), (31) and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: (32) and standby their witnessing, (33) and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; (34) Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss).
