Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Pen (Al-Qalam) before The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
O THOU enwrapped one! (1) Rise to pray in the night except a little, (2) Half of it - or subtract from it a little (3) Or a little more, and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly. (4) Behold, We shall cast upon thee a weighty word; (5) Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise). (6) whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. (7) And remember thou the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself to Him with an exclusive devotion. (8) [He is] the Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs. (9) Bear with patience what they say, and gracefully come away from them. (10) Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile. (11) Verily, with Us are fetters (to bind them), and a raging Fire. (12) food which chokes (them), and a painful torment. (13) (They will come across all this) on the Day when the earth and the mountains shall tremble violently and the mountains shall crumble into heaps of scattered sand. (14) Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. (15) But Pharoah rebelled against the messenger, so We seized him with a strong, crushing grip. (16) If you persist in disbelieving, how will you guard yourself against the (woe of the) Day that will turn children grey-haired, (17) The heaven will split asunder with its grief; the promise of Allah will surely occur. (18) This is indeed a Reminder. Let whosoever will take the Path to his Lord. (19)
