Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Pen (Al-Qalam) before The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who have wrapped up in your garments! (1) Stand up in Prayer by night, all but a small part of it; (2) A half thereof, or abate a little thereof, (3) Or a little more, and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly. (4) For we shall charge thee with a word of weight. (5) Verily the rising by night! it is most curbing and most conducive to right speech. (6) You have by day prolonged occupations. (7) And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. (8) The Lord of the East and the West-- there is no god but He-- therefore take Him for a protector. (9) And bear thou with patience whatsoever they say, and depart from them with a becoming departure. (10) And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little. (11) Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, (12) And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment (13) (They will come across all this) on the Day when the earth and the mountains shall tremble violently and the mountains shall crumble into heaps of scattered sand. (14) We have indeed sent a Noble Messenger towards you, a present witness over you the way We had sent a Noble Messenger towards Firaun. (15) But Fir'aun (Pharaoh) disobeyed the Messenger [Musa (Moses)], so We seized him with a severe punishment. (16) How then, if you disbelieve, will you preserve yourselves on the day which will even turn the children hoary? (17) The heavens itself will be rent asunder (on that day). His promise is bound to be fulfilled. (18) This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord. (19)
