The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! (1) Arise and warn! (2) proclaim the greatness of your Lord, (3) and purify your robes, (4) And banish all trepidation. (5) And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! (6) and be patient unto thy Lord. (7) And when the trumpet is blown, (8) It will be a day of distress, (9) Far from easy for those without Faith. (10) Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, (11) And to whom I granted extensive wealth (12) and children as [love's] witnesses, (13) I made things smooth and easy for him, (14) and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. (15) Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. (16) and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. (17) Lo! He reflected, and determined -- (18) (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! (19) Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! (20) Then he looked, (21) frowned and scowled; (22) Then he turned away, and was haughty. (23) and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! (24) These are only words from a mere mortal". (25) Him shall I fling unto the burning. (26) And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? (27) It neither leaves, nor spares. (28) it scorches the skin; (29) Above it are nineteen guards. (30) We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. (31)
