The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! (1) arise and give warning! (2) and magnify the glory of your Lord, (3) And thine inner self purify! (4) and defilement flee! (5) And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! (6) And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! (7) For when the Trump is sounded (8) that will surely be a hard day, (9) and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. (10) Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! (11) and appointed for him ample wealth (12) And sons always present by his side, (13) And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; (14) then he is eager that I should do more. (15) Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! (16) and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. (17) For he thought and he plotted;- (18) So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. (19) Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - (20) He then dared to lift his gaze. (21) And frowned and puckered his brow, (22) then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, (23) And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; (24) This is naught but the word of a mortal. (25) I will surely roast him in the Scorching. (26) - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - (27) It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. (28) and it burns the flesh. (29) over it are nineteen. (30) And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. (31)
