The Human (Al-Insan)
31 verses, revealed in Medina after The All Compassionate (Al-Rahman) before Divorce (Al-Talaaq)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Surely there hath come upon man a space of time when he was not a thing worth mentioning. (1) We have created the human from a (sperm) drop, a mixture, testing him; We made him to hear and see. (2) Indeed, We have guided him to the path, he is either grateful or ungrateful. (3) Lo! We have prepared for disbelievers manacles and carcans and a raging fire. (4) [whereas,] behold, the truly virtuous shall drink from a cup flavoured with the calyx of sweet-smelling flowers: (5) A Fountain where the Devotees of Allah do drink, making it flow in unstinted abundance. (6) (Because) they perform the vow and fear a day whereof the evil is wide-spreading, (7) And they feed, for the love of Allah, the indigent, the orphan, and the captive,- (8) (saying): “We feed you only for Allah's sake; we do not seek of you any recompense or thanks, (9) behold, we stand in awe of our Sustainer's judgment on a distressful, fateful Day!" (10) Therefore, God will ward off from them the woes of that Day, and make them find brightness and joy, (11) And their recompense shall be Paradise, and silken garments, because they were patient. (12) Reclining therein on raised thrones, they will see there neither the excessive heat of the sun, nor the excessive bitter cold, (as in Paradise there is no sun and no moon). (13) And the shade thereof is close upon them, and the bunches of fruit thereof will hang low within their reach. (14) And amongst them will be passed round vessels of silver and cups of crystal, (15) Clear glasses [made] from silver of which they have determined the measure. (16) and they will be given a cup to drink flavoured with ginger, (17) From a spring by the name of Ever-flowing-Salsabil. (18) ۞ There will circulate among them young boys made eternal. When you see them, you would think them [as beautiful as] scattered pearls. (19) wherever you look, you will see bliss and a great kingdom: (20) Upon those [blest] will be garments of green silk and brocade; and they will be adorned with bracelets of silver. And their Sustainer will them to drink of a drink most pure. (21) (And it will be said to them): "Verily, this is a reward for you, and your endeavour has been accepted." (22)
